Rachel Burton
Advertising Administrative Assistant

Hello! I am very excited to have come coast to coast to this new community of His people who are passionately following His call for Kingdom justice in Washington D.C.! I consider myself so blessed to have been placed here for a season; to live in community with my brothers and sisters while serving and learning as the Advertising Assistant this year at Sojourners.

I have come to D.C. most recently from sunny San Diego, California where I graduated in June from UC San Diego. I had the opportunity to study Communications and Urban Studies there, while also pursuing what it looks like to live out my relationship with Christ through relationships in my community. *Translation: I love encouraging and learning from others through building relationships as we recognize together the different gifts God has given us to impact our families, cities, and world!

A few of the things I am passionate about; family trips to the lake, recording memories through photos and words, coffee and tea, putting a face and a relationship to the poverty and brokenness in our world, building community, exploring new cities, Swedish Fish, my relationships in Malawi Africa, spending quality time with friends, the ocean, reading, giraffes, grace, and Eka; a precious young girl in Malawi who is now dancing with Jesus, but I still miss every day. She captured my whole heart and put a face to His calling for us to listen to the voices of the unheard and see the hearts of the unseen in our world today.

A very wise staff member at Sojourners recently told me that a tree cannot grow branches unless it first grows roots. This resonated truth with me in a new way about my family and community of friends that continually challenge me, love me when I don’t deserve it, and journey through life along side with me. I grew up in the small town of Grass Valley, in the beautiful foothills of Northern California with two incredible examples of Christ’s love in action and relationship through my parents. I also have the blessing of two younger sisters who I have had the joy of climbing trees and building forts with, learning from, journeying through difficult seasons, and grappling with what He has called us to as women of Christ. These roots are what remain as I venture out to I follow what I know God is calling me to, as it is said in Micah; to seek justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly…so this year, here we come! J
